Health insurance and proof of certain immunizations are mandatory requirements for all UCLA students, and are conditions of registration.
Medical/Health Insurance
The University of California Student Health Insurance Plan (UCSHIP) fulfills this requirement, and its fee is billed through BruinBill along with other UCLA fees each academic term. Students who are already covered by a qualified medical/health insurance policy may waive this fee if qualifying information is submitted by published fee-payment deadlines.
Waiving UCSHIP
Students may waive UCSHIP if they
- maintain active enrollment in a qualified medical/health insurance plan that meets all established requirements
- apply for a UCSHIP waiver each term by the published deadline
- correctly complete the online UCSHIP waiver form
When waiving UCSHIP, students are responsible for knowing the benefits of and local providers for their medical plan. A pre-waiver worksheet is available to assist students before they complete an actual waiver. If a private insurance plan does not meet waiver criteria, the waiver will be denied. The waiver form must be submitted through the Ashe Student Health and Wellness Center website.
An annual waiver can be completed only during the fall waiver period; if an annual waiver is granted, no additional waiver forms are needed for the rest of the academic year. Otherwise, a UCSHIP waiver must be submitted for each waiver period by the submission deadline. No late waivers are given. Students should pay careful attention to meeting the deadline to ensure that they do not incur unplanned expenses. There are no refunds after the deadline.
Graduate Students
The mandatory medical insurance premium is paid for all eligible academic apprentice personnel. Graduate students should not waive health insurance if they want the premium paid as part of their employment. A waiver cannot be reversed during the term even if a student has been given a fee deferral.
Third parties may not waive UCSHIP for a student. Waivers must be submitted by the stated deadlines whether or not fees have been paid by that date. UCSHIP waiver deadlines are strictly enforced.
Immunization Requirement
California law requires students to provide proof of vaccination or immunity to measles, meningitis, mumps, rubella (MMR), pertussis (whooping cough), varicella (chickenpox), and screening for tuberculosis, prior to entering and enrolling at the University of California. The requirement is a condition of enrollment at UCLA.
To satisfy the requirement, all students must submit their information electronically on the Ashe Center website. No paper documentation is required. Additional vaccinations are also recommended. See the immunization requirements site for details.
