Health insurance and proof of certain immunizations are mandatory requirements for all UCLA students, and are conditions of registration.
Medical/Health Insurance
The University of California Student Health Insurance Plan (UCSHIP) fulfills this requirement, and its fee is billed through BruinBill along with other UCLA fees each academic term. Students who are already covered by a qualified medical/health insurance policy may waive UCSHIP and its fee if a waiver application and qualifying information are submitted by the published fdeadline, and the application is approved.
Waiving UCSHIP
Students may waive UCSHIP if they
- maintain active enrollment in a qualified medical/health insurance plan that meets all established requirements
- submit a UCSHIP waiver application by the published deadline
- receive approval of their waiver application
When waiving UCSHIP, students are responsible for knowing the benefits of and local providers for their medical plan. If a private insurance plan does not meet waiver criteria, the waiver will be denied. The waiver application can be accessed through the Ashe Student Health and Wellness Center UCSHIP waiver web page.
An annual waiver can be completed only during the fall waiver period; if an annual waiver is granted, no additional waiver applications are needed for the rest of the academic year. Otherwise, a waiver application must be submitted during a subsequent term waiver period and would be valid for only the remaining term(s). No late waivers are given. Students should pay careful attention to meeting the deadline to ensure that they do not incur unplanned expenses. There are no refunds after the deadline.
Graduate Students
The mandatory UCSHIP fee is paid for all eligible academic apprentice personnel. Graduate students should not waive UCSHIP if they want the fee paid as part of their employment. A waiver cannot be reversed during the term, even if a student has been given a fee deferral.
Third parties may not waive UCSHIP for a student. Waivers must be submitted by the stated deadlines whether or not fees have been paid by that date. UCSHIP waiver deadlines are strictly enforced.
Immunization Requirement
The UC Immunization Policy (PDF) requires students to provide proof of vaccination or immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR); pertussis (whooping cough); varicella (chicken pox); meningitis (MenACWY) for students age 21 and younger; and screening for tuberculosis. As a condition of physical presence on campus, the UC COVID-19 Vaccination Policy (PDF) requires students to provide proof of vaccination for COVID-19, including boosters; or submit an exception request at least two weeks before instruction begins. Students who do not comply with these policies are subject to a hold on their record.
Proof must be provided prior to entering and enrolling at the University of California, and is a condition of enrollment at UCLA. To satisfy the requirement, students must submit their information through the Ashe Center patient portal. No paper documentation is required.
Additional vaccinations are also recommended. For full details, see the immunization requirements website.
