Decisions on residence status for tuition purposes are made only after the student has been admitted to the University and has completed an online Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) and Statement of Legal Residence (SLR).
Decisions on residence status for tuition purposes are not made prior to admission to the University. Such decisions are made only after the student has been admitted, and has completed an online Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) and a Statement of Legal Residence (SLR).
Residence determination is made on a case-by-case basis. Neither departments nor individual students should assume that one-year presence in California automatically results in a positive residence determination. At the campus level, the residence deputy is the only person qualified to answer residence questions or to make a determination regarding residence status.
Only the campus residence deputy is authorized to supply information about residence for tuition purposes. No other campus personnel or department may overturn the campus determination of residence for tuition purposes.
Financial Independence
Financial independence for tuition purposes is determined separately and only by the campus residence deputy, and that outcome may differ from financial independence as determined by Financial Aid and Scholarships based on the FAFSA. Undergraduate students whose parents are not California residents are not likely to meet the financial independence requirement.
