New Disability Studies bachelor’s degree

Effective fall 2023, the College of Letters and Science offers a bachelor's degree in Disability Studies. Offered by the self-named interdepartmental program (IDP), the major examines disability as a social, cultural, and aesthetic construct. Students participate in an internship at a community service provider or policy institution. Through a capstone seminar or independent research project, students create a final creative project or paper.

New Creative Writing minor

Effective fall 2023, a new minor in Creative Writing is offered by the English department. The minor allows students to develop the craft of poetry or short fiction writing, and to explore different and emerging areas of writing practice. These can include creative nonfiction (including long-form journalism and the personal essay), playwriting and screenwriting, hybrid genres, and digital forms such as writing for the Internet. The minor is excellent preparation for those who plan to pursue advanced degrees in writing, as well as those who want careers in writing and creative industries.

New Health Data Science master’s degree

Effective fall 2023, the Biostatistics department offers a self-supporting Master of Data Science in Health (MDSH) degree. The hybrid online and in-person program is designed for working professionals to help meet health industry needs for well-trained, professional health-data analytics leaders. The degree emphasizes analytical tools and computing; practical health data solutions; and close connections with the health industry, and other public health fields. The MDSH is designed for students with quantitative skills interested in data management, statistical computing, data analysis, and statistical modeling for big data.

Bachelor’s degrees in Public Health

Effective fall 2022, the Jonathan and Karen Fielding School of Public Health offers both a bachelor of arts (BA) and bachelor of science (BS) in Public Health. Both degrees are designed for those interested in improving health in diverse populations, and introduce students to public-health-related foundations of scientific and social knowledge. The BS degree is focused on the science of public health. The BA degree is focused on the application of public health to general and global issues.

Effective spring 2023, some Statistics department degrees are renamed to reflect the department name change. The bachelor’s degree and minor in Statistics are renamed Statistics and Data Science. The self-supporting Master of Applied Statistics degree is renamed Master of Applied Statistics and Data Science. The master’s and doctor of philosophy degrees in Statistics, minor in Social Data Science, bachelor’s degree in Data Theory (jointly administered with Mathematics), and the Statistics subject area retain their existing names.

2022

New Data Science master’s degree

Effective fall 2022, the Computational Medicine department offers a self-supporting MS in Data Science in Biomedicine degree. The two-year, nine-course, mostly online program combines foundational training in areas of data science including machine learning, statistics, data mining, algorithms, and analytics. It also offers understanding of application areas including genomics, medical imaging, analysis of electronic health records and other types of medical data such as waveforms and mobile health data. Program graduates will be able to develop new data science methodologies and apply them widely.

New Iranian Music minor

Effective winter 2022, a new minor in Iranian Music is offered by the Ethnomusicology department. The minor combines music as an art form with questions about how musical art and practice relate to other aspects of culture, society, politics, religion, identity, gender, and economics. Study includes participation in the Persian music ensemble. See the Iranian music program website.

Greek minor name change

Effective spring 2022, the undergraduate Greek minor is renamed Greek Language and Culture. The minor is housed in the Classics department.

New Fiat Lux subject area

Effective winter 2022, a new Fiat Lux subject area is established. It is administered by the Fiat Lux faculty advisory committee. In keeping with the mission of the Fiat Lux program, the new subject area allows faculty to explore interdisciplinary topics that fall outside traditional departmental subject areas. Many topics in this subject area have have been offered under the Honors 19 course number.

New Information and Media Literacy minor

Effective winter 2022, a new minor in information and media literacy is offered jointly by the Information Studies and Education departments. The minor covers field fundamentals and digital citizenship; impact of media, social media, and technology on society and culture; the digital divide; potential weaponization of media; effective research strategies; and ethical/legal issues in the field.

New Research Practice subject area

Effective winter 2022, a new Research Practice subject area is established. It is administered by both undergraduate research centers: humanities, arts, and social sciences (HASS); and sciences. The new subject area centralizes current course offerings; encourages new interdisciplinary course offerings; and increases access to, and engagement in, research for all undergraduates.

New data science engineering minor

Effective winter 2022, a new minor in data science engineering is offered jointly by the Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering departments. The minor is designed to expose students to the entire data science life cycle, from collection and analysis to technologies and human factors. Its scope includes foundational data skills and applications that use them. The minor is initially focused on the needs of students in Engineering and STEM disciplines.

New applied chemical sciences master’s degree

Effective fall 2021, the Chemistry and Biochemistry department offers a Master of Applied Chemical Sciences (MACS) degree. The self-supporting, two-year program consists of practical chemistry applications with emphasis on soft professional skill development. Through a full-year capstone project, students are directly involved with industry collaborators and applied research projects.

CAEM IDP and master’s degree renamed

Effective fall 2021, the Conservation of Archeological and Ethnographic Materials interdepartmental program, and its master of arts (MA) degree, are renamed Conservation of Cultural Heritage. The change reflects the broader nature of education and training offered by the program.

New master’s degree in quantum science

Effective fall 2021, the Physics and Astronomy department offers a self-supporting Master of Quantum Science and Technology (MQST) degree. The self-supporting, one-year program consists of research and laboratory work, an internship, and a capstone presentation. Its interdisciplinary approach includes introductory, theory, and quantum computer programming courses that lead to a working knowledge preparation for a career this emerging field.

New European Languages and Transcultural Studies department

Effective fall 2021, the departments of French and Francophone Studies, Germanic Languages, and Italian—and the Scandinavian Section—merge to become the department of European Languages and Transcultural Studies (ELTS). The new department aims to offer a wider and more holistic course of study, focusing on the breadth of languages and cultures across Europe. ELTS approaches cultural literacy through more interdisciplinary study of European cultures, while preserving the excellent language instruction for which UCLA is known.

New Social Data Science minor

Effective fall 2021, the Statistics department offers a new minor in Social Data Science. It is designed to offer a solid background in data science for social science majors. Focused on using data to understand societal issues, the minor connects students to data and the role it has in social science inquiry. The minor offers multiple tracks, such as social justice and social networks, that allow students to follow an interdisciplinary approach in an area of interest.

Applied economics degree name change

Effective spring 2021, the master’s degree in applied economics is renamed Master of Quantitative Economics (MQE). The change reflects the quantitative nature of the curriculum, which aligns with industry trends and market demands. The program covers theory and application of econometrics and micro and macroeconomics.

New master’s degree in health care administration

Effective spring 2021, the department of Health Policy and Management offers an online Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) degree. The two– to three-year program equips health care professionals with a strong business foundation so they can excel in administration within professional organizations. The self-supporting program offers industry-specific training and experiences to prepare students for management, decision-making, and leadership positions in health industries from care to technology. Study spans public health, health care, and administration. The program includes two immersion sessions and a capstone project.

New MURP dual degree program

Effective fall 2020, the Urban Planning department offers a dual Master of Urban and Regional Planning degree with the Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris (aka SciencesPo). In this intensive program, students complete UCLA MURP requirements in the first year and spend the second year in Paris at SciencesPo. The program offers more comparative urbanization, urban planning, and urban policy than a traditional MURP degree. As a top European university, SciencesPo is known for its global, comparative approach; and counts many international public officials among its alumni.

Chicana and Chicano Studies department name change

Effective winter 2021, the César E. Chávez Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies department name changes to César E. Chávez Department of Chicana and Chicano and Central American Studies. The change makes visible the department's established approach to research, teaching, and advocacy about Central American people and cultures. The region — including El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras — is a source of rich cultural and literary production, knowledge, and philosophy. Concepts of indigeneity and multiple identities of local Central American immigrants also play into the curriculum. A minor in Central American studies is under consideration.

New Brain and Behavioral Health minor

Effective fall 2020, the College Life Sciences division offers a new minor in Brain and Behavioral Health. In partnership with the Semel Institute, the minor covers translational science — the focus on evidence-based prevention and treatment programs at multiple levels (individual, family, school, community) — which has become a primary focus of behavioral health. Key features include understanding of basic brain science and behavioral issues at hand, and their interaction in context; and development and rigorous evaluation of programs and policies based on them.

UCLA In-Person Classes Suspended; Classes and Exams Now Online

Effective March 11, 2020, UCLA in-person classes are suspended, and have transitioned to online platforms through April 10. Winter quarter final exams will be given remotely. This change is made as a precautionary measure designed to limit opportunities for the spread of COVID-19. It is among several measures UCLA is taking in operational, entertainment, and academic areas to further this goal. Astronomy graduate degrees name change

Effective fall 2018, the MS and PhD degrees in Astronomy are now named Astronomy and Astrophysics, to better reflects industry standards.
